Brief Divergent Chapter 2 Summary:
The Divergent Chapter 2 summary, in short, is that this is the day for the aptitude test. Caleb goes first and returns pale and shaking. The main character, Beatrice, and her neighbor Susan are next.
Beatrice is led to a room with a chair and a machine. A member of Dauntless who introduces herself as Tori places wires on Beatrice's hands and electrodes on her head and tells her to drink a vial of clear water.
Beatrice suddenly finds herself in a room with two baskets, one with cheese, the other with a large knife and a voice tells her to choose one. She refuses and the baskets disappear and a growling dog appears instead. With no defense, Beatrice uses her memory to protect herself. Dogs smell fear, see eye contact as aggression and shouldn't hurt you if you're submissive. This tactic works and the dog licks her.
A small child in a white dress appears. The dog immediately tries to attack, but Beatrice throws herself on top of the dog to save the child. The dog and the child disappear and Beatrice finds herself on a bus.
On the bus, a man angrily looks at a newspaper and asks Beatrice if she knows a murderer that is pictured in it. Although the face pictured seems familiar, Beatrice lies and says she does not know the man, even though the bus passenger says if she did know it could save him.

Divergent Chapter 2 Summary (Extended version)
Divergent Chapter 2 starts out with the main character, her brother (Caleb) and their neighbor (Susan) sitting in the school cafeteria anxiously awaiting the aptitude test. The main character reflects on the fact that Susan's dad, who has a car, offered to take her and Caleb to school, but Caleb refused in order to not inconvenience her father. Caleb has been selfless for as long as she can remember.
The main character surveys the room and notices that each of the factions are waiting in a different manner that is exactly what their faction expects of them.
We are informed that Abnegation faction members administer the test, but it is against the rules for them to test their own faction, so there is also an Erudite and a Dauntless volunteer helping out.
Caleb is called to his aptitude test first. He returns ten minutes later, shaking and pale. The main character is not allowed to ask about the test and Caleb is not allowed to tell her about it. As Susan and the main character are called, we finally find out her name. "Beatrice Prior."
Beatrice is led to room six where the walls are made of mirrors and there is nothing in the room except a dentist's chair and a machine. The woman giving the test is Dauntless and she introduces herself as "Tori."
Tori is not as wildly dressed as the younger Dauntless- she wears a black blazer and jeans, but Beatrice notices a black and white hawk tattoo on her neck. The hawk has one red eye. Beatrice cannot contain her nerves or her curiosity and she asks Tori what is means.
Tori replies that she's never met a curious Abnegation member before and explains that in ancient civilization the hawk represented the sun. Tori admits that she used to be afraid of the dark, but not anymore.
Wires are placed on Beatrice's hands and electrodes onto her forehead. The wires lead to both Tori and a machine. Beatrice is handed a vial of clear liquid to drink, but Tori is not allowed to tell her what it is for or what is about to happen.
Suddenly, Beatrice finds herself in the school cafeteria, but it is empty. She looks around and sees snow outside the glass windows and a table with two baskets. One basket contains cheese, the other a knife the size of her forearm.
"Choose," a voice coming from no one in particular demands repeatedly. When the voice doesn't tell her why, Beatrice folds her arms stubbornly. The baskets disappear and a snarling dog appears a few yards away.
With no cheese or weapons, Beatrice relies on her knowledge to overcome the dog. She recalls that dogs can smell fear and that any eye contact is considered aggressive. She slowly lays on the ground to show that she is submissive and the dog begins to playfully lick her and interact with her.
She is glad she didn't choose the knife.
Then, a young girl in a white dress yells, "Puppy!" Before Beatrice can warn her of the danger, the dog lunges and Beatrice throws herself onto its back with her arms around its neck. The girl and dog disappear and Beatrice finds herself alone in the testing room.
She walks out of the room and finds herself on a bus where the seats are taken. A man angrily reading a newspaper with a headline about murder demands to know if Beatrice knows that man photographed. Beatrice is not sure how she knows him, but he seems familiar.
Instead of admitting this, Beatrice decides to shrug her shoulders, which she knows is a lie. The man says she can save him if she knows who he is and Beatrice stubbornly replies, "Nope."

- Erudite are reading books and newspapers to increase their knowledge
- The Amity faction is playing a hand slapping game and saying a rhyme
- Candor appear to be in an argument, yet have smiles on their faces
- Abnegation sits quietly
