Divergent Chapter 3 Summary (Extended)
Beatrice awakens from the simulation and Tori nervously leaves the room. As she is gone, Beatrice wonders if she'll end up with the Factionless, in poverty on the street.
Tori returns and explains to Beatrice that her test results were inconclusive. Though she is not Amity or Candor, the test was not conclusive on the other three factions. Tori explains that this means that Beatrice is Divergent and that it is dangerous to be Divergent and Beatrice should never tell anyone... ever.
Tori sends Beatrice home to think about the test results.
As Beatrice walks home she reflects on the warm, helpful, selfless community of the Abnegation which is good but doesn't feel natural. Then she looks around at the collapsed street exposing sewer lines and empty subway stations that reek of sewage. This is where the Factionless live. She remembers that they do the jobs no one else wants (bus drivers, janitors, garbage collectors, etc.) and are paid in small amounts of food and clothing that aren't enough.
She runs into a Factionless man who asks her for food. Her first instinct is to run, but her selfless nature takes over and she goes to hand him some dried apples. Rather than grabbing the apples, he tightly grabs her wrist and tells her how pretty her eyes are and how someone so young shouldn't be walking alone. She can't pull away from him.
She explains that she's not as young as she looks, she's sixteen. He comments on how tomorrow is the Choosing Ceremony. She demands that he let go and prepares to hit him and run off. Just before she does so, he lets go and takes the apples, telling her, "Choose wisely, little girl."
