Chapter 5 Summary (Extended)

It is the day of the Choosing Ceremony. Caleb is calm and confident about where he belongs, but Beatrice is a nervous wreck. The Abnegation take the bus to the Hub, where the ceremony will take place. Once they arrive, Beatrice's father leaves the elevator as an act of selflessness and allows Amity to take his family's place. They take the 20 flights of stairs instead, and the other Abnegation members follow.

As they move as a group up the stairs, Beatrice feels comfort in the fact that they peacefully move as one steady mass. However, as she starts to lose her breath and her legs start to hurt, she realizes she may not be cut out for selflessness.

They arrive on the 20th floor and Beatrice's father holds the door for everyone else before joining the family. "See you later," he confidently tells Beatrice and Caleb- he knows they'll choose Abnegation. Beatrice's mother embraces her in a long hug and tells her "I love you no matter what," as if she knows that Beatrice may leave Abnegation.

As of right now, the sixteen year olds are not members of their factions. Once they choose a faction they will become initiates. They will not become members until they pass initation.

The room is set up in a circular form, with the sixteen year olds lined up alphabetically on the outer circle, then a space, then rows of chairs for the families that is divided up between the factions. In the center of the room are five bowls containing a special substance representing each of the five factions:
  • Abnegation- stones
  • Candor- glass
  • Erudite- water
  • Dauntless- coals set on fire
  • Amity- earth
There is also a podium in the center of the room, where Marcus stands. The factions take turns each year running the ceremony, and this year is Abnegation's turn. Marcus starts off by giving a speech about how the teenagers are on the precipice of adulthood and it is now time for them to choose their destiny.

Marcus then tells the history of how the Choosing Ceremony came about- that in order to create peace, groups of people formed based on the character traits they blamed for the war and pledged to ban that trait from their faction.
  • Abnegation blamed selfishness
  • Amity blamed aggression
  • Candor blamed duplicity
  • Dauntless blamed cowardice
  • Erudite blamed ignorance
Marcus also points out that apart from their factions, they would not survive. To be factionless is the scariest thing possible, even over death.

Marcus begins to call each of the teenagers up in reverse alphabetical order. The first girl, from Amity, chooses Amity. Beatrice knows most of the people being called, but doubts that they know her. Suddenly, James Tucker, from the Dauntless faction, surprises the crowd by spilling his blood upon the glass filled bowl for Candor.

Beatrice reflects on his decision. James will now be leaving his family. In a week and a half, they have the option to visit him, but Beatrice doubts that the family will because it's considered an act of betrayal to leave your faction.

Before she knows it, Caleb is up. He moves confidently as he takes the knife and slices his hand. He then bites his lip and holds his hand over the bowl full of water... Erudite. This shocks the room, especially Beatrice, and Marcus has to quiet the room. The Abnegation cast glances at their enemies, the Erudite, who smile smugly and nudge each other.

Now that Caleb has made the choice to leave their family, Beatrice cannot imagine leaving her parents alone. As her name is called she becomes certain that she will choose Abnegation as he has left her no choice. She pictures her Abnegation life: marrying Robert and staying in a comfortable routine. She looks over at Caleb who nods at her.

If Caleb wasn't fit for Abnegation, how could she be?

She looks into Marcus's unusual dark blue eyes as he hands her the knife. She cuts her palm and holds it to her chest before extending her arm. The blood drips on the floor between two bowls... the Abnegation and the Dauntless. With an audible gasp she moves her arm forward and her blood sizzles on the burning coals.

"I am selfish. I am brave." Beatrice chose Dauntless.

Short Chapter 5 Summary

In Divergent Chapter 5, we join Beatrice and her family at the Choosing Ceremony. Marcus Eaton leads the event. It is held in a room with five bowls each containing a specific substance used to represent each of the five factions: stones/Abnegation, glass/Candor, water/Erudite, fire/Dauntless and earth/Amity.

The 16 year olds are called up one by one in reverse alphabetical order so Caleb goes before his sister Beatrice. Caleb shocks the crowd when he chooses Erudite, Abnegation's sworn enemy. Beatrice feels that this took away her option to leave her parents, so she is very torn.

In the end, Beatrice slices her hand and lets her blood sizzle on the Dauntless coals. She has chosen to leave her family.
